Lindeth Howe was built as a summer holiday home for a wealthy mill owner in 1897. It was situated in a 28-acre estate commanding fine views over Windermere. He rented the house out to friends for holidays. Amongst those people were the Potter family.
Bruce Canon Vernon Wentworth of Wentworth Castle, nr Barnsley, a retired Captain of Her Majesty's Grenadier Guards bought the house around the turn of the century.
During the period 1902 to 1913, amid the peace and tranquillity of the area, Beatrix Potter wrote and illustrated her wonderful stories, two of which, Timmy Tiptoes and Pigland Bland, were illustrated whilst she was at Lindeth Howe.
In 1915, Lindeth Howe was purchased for Mrs Helen Potter for her to live in following the death of Rupert Potter. Beatrix had fallen in love with the property during the times she had stayed there and notified her mother when the sale was announced. At this time Beatrix lived in her property in Sawrey.
In 1933 Mr & Mrs Doxford bought the house from Beatrix Potter as their family home. Their two sons grew up in the house and Mr Doxford Junior is still a regular guest at the hotel, staying in the room which was his nursery as a child. He keeps many photographs of the house and shares his memories and childhood stories of the house with the staff and guests. The ground floor windows of the still use a superbly engineered opening system, which his father designed, made and installed.
Following the sale of the property in 1947, the purchaser converted the property into two houses and a flat.
In 1978 a local family called Postlethwaite purchased the house and started a Bed and Breakfast business. During this period various plots of land were sold out of the estate and a few other private houses were built all sharing the same driveway to the main property.
In 1978 the Baxter family purchased one half of the of the property which operated as the Bed and Breakfast business and the subsequently purchased the other half, Lindeth Brea in 1983, converting the property back into one complete family home. Lindeth Howe thus became a small country house hotel with 15 bedrooms and a private family accommodation for the owners.
In 1988 the Baxter's retired and sold Lindeth Howe with the benefit of an extensive planning permission to its present owner, Norman Stoller OBE DL, a retired businessman from Oldham. Much of his private life was spent in the Lake District and thus resulted in the acquisition of a business in the area following his retirement.
1999, the hotel was enlarged very much in keeping with the original architecture and now has 36 bedrooms, and an house pool and leisure area for residents, whilst still retaining a lovely restaurant and spacious lounges.
Again, history has been made in 2003 when the Postlethwaite family took over the hotel exclusively for the weekend in order to celebrate the marriage of their daughter, Alison.
