Pigling Bland Fairy Cake Competition

Winners Create Magic at the Pigling Bland Fairy Cake Competition

Wow what an exciting afternoon Marc and I had enjoying the expertise of keen bakers of all ages creating cake magic in Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel’s annual Fairy Cake Competition 2013, ensuring that the 100th birthday celebrations of Beatrix Potter character, Pigling Bland continued to sparkle.

‘The Tale of Pigling Bland’ was written and illustrated at Lindeth Howe by Beatrix Potter, who once owned the house. For this reason, Pigling Bland was the theme of this year’s contest.

We found the contest difficult to judge as all the entries were outstanding but we decided to award first place to an absolutely stunning piece of decorative cake art, which showcased the little pig’s story in a truly breathtaking way. The entry montage from Louise Chaplow in the over 18s category included edible figures made from sugar craft of Potter character Pigling Bland and his friend Pig-wig.

Louise has had no formal baking training, but has experimented lately and has made a few cakes for birthday celebrations. Louise who works in Kendal as a Receptionist, said was delighted to take first prize and pick up the Lindeth Howe trophy.

The prize in the under 12s category was won by Marley Brafield, who baked and decorated exquisite fairy cakes. The under 5s category was won by Little Rascals Daycare in Troutbeck.

Marc and I thought the children also showed off their baking talents in a big way, creating fabulous cakes that looked simply mouth-watering. The standard was extremely high this year and we are delighted that Pigling Bland has had such a fuss made over him, I am sure he will “Oink Oinking” all the way around the hotel about his birthday cakes!

The runner-ups in the over 18s category were Christine Dacre (2nd) and the Hapimag team in Bowness (3rd). Runners-up prizes in the under 12s category went to Amy Holden and Neve Brafield.

We are currently coming up with ideas for next year’s fairy cake competition theme and its certainly worth entering as you could win either 5 course dinner for 4 in our 2 AA rosette restaurant, Full Afternoon Tea for 4, pictures donated by Marley Photography, Pigling Bland Limited Edition Books, Pigling Bland Toys and Beatrix Potter Gifts from Lindeth Howe. How exciting and keep an eye out for the competition dates for next year!!!
